Good day, and welcome to a new edition of The Monitor, WIRED’s culture news roundup. This week there’s a lot of attention being paid to the upcoming release of The Joker, but a few other noteworthy bits have happened as well. For one, Will Smith is on TikTok now. For another? Well, read on to find out.
Will Smith Joins TikTok
It was bound to happen. Not a week after fellow celeb Reese Witherspoon got on the app, the Fresh Prince has officially joined TikTok. In his first post, the multi-hyphenate appears on a young man’s phone, only to be plucked from the screen and dropped into the room with him. Smith ends the clip by saying, “I guess I’m on TikTok now. That was weird, y’all.” (Was it weird, though, Will? Really? You love social media. This isn’t that surprising.) No word yet on whether any future TikToks will feature 25-year-old Will Smith.
Snowpiercer Is Changing Networks—Again
Ah, the Snowpiercer saga. No, not the one where everyone is stuck on a train trying to survive. The one where the show about the people stuck on the train trying to survive keeps changing its home network. The show, based on the 2013 Bong Joon-ho film of same name, was originally developed by TNT, but later taken to the TBS network. Now, the show is going back to TNT, where it’ll debut in early 2020. “We’ve had the unique opportunity to more thoroughly test and explore where this show will best perform,” Kevin Reilly, president of TNT, TBS, and truTV, told Variety. “After further research and consideration we’ve decided to keep Snowpiercer on TNT. Now that we’ve seen this incredible postapocalyptic sci-fi series in its entirety, and better understand the audience this show will appeal to, we’re confident it will perform strongest on TNT.” Well, OK then!
Here’s the First Birds of Prey Trailer
