The ‘Stranger Things’ Season 4 Teaser Is Here

Happy Monday and welcome to another installment of The Monitor, WIRED’s culture news roundup. What did you miss over the weekend? Well, for one thing, you’re getting another Spidey movie. For another, Ellen DeGeneres is getting into the streaming wars. And there’s a trailer for BBC’s The War of the Worlds. Let’s dive in.

The Stranger Things Season 4 Trailer

As teased at the end of the last season of Stranger Things, the next installment is moving beyond the small Indiana town where it started. According to a new teaser for the fourth season, released today, “We’re not in Hawkins anymore.” The clip doesn’t reveal any other details—plot, release date, etc.—but it promises to be just as quirky and dark as everything that came before it. In other news, Netflix just signed the Duffer Brothers, creators of the series, to a new, multiyear deal for film and TV projects. “The Duffer Brothers have captivated viewers around the world with Stranger Things and we’re thrilled to expand our relationship with them to bring their vivid imaginations to other film and series projects our members will love,” Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said in a statement. “We can’t wait to see what the Duffer Brothers have in store when they step outside the world of The Upside Down.”

Spider-Man Is Getting Another Movie in the MCU

Guess it was just a trial separation. After announcing earlier this year that they couldn’t reach a deal on another Spider-Man film, Sony Pictures and Marvel Entertainment announced on Friday that Marvel honcho Kevin Feige would indeed produce a third Spidey film to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Once again, Tom Holland will play Peter Parker. The dispute between Disney, Marvel’s parent company, and Sony, which owns the web-slinger’s cinematic rights, started over financing the third film. Marvel reportedly wanted the financing to be 50/50, and it now seems as though Sony has agreed to those terms. The film is scheduled for release on July 16, 2021.

Ellen DeGeneres Is Bringing Four Shows to HBO Max

In the latest development in the streaming wars, Ellen DeGeneres announced on her daytime talk show last week that she would be bringing four shows to HBO Max. Three shows—Ellen’s Home Design Challenge, First Dates Hotel, and animated children’s series Little Ellen—have been given straight-to-series orders. The fourth, a document-series called Finding Einstein, is still in development.
