The Final Trailer for ‘Joker’ Is Beyond Bleak

Happy Thursday and welcome to a new edition of The Monitor, WIRED’s culture news roundup. What do we have this time around? First, we have some sad updates for fans of The OA and Saturday Night Live. But, we have good tidings for folks who are excited for Joker and those looking for increased diversity in Rotten Tomatoes scores. Here we go!

The OA Won’t Get a Movie

What a crazy couple of weeks it’s been for The OA and its fandom. After the show got cancelled by Netflix on August 5, fans launched an all-out campaign to get it back. There was hope that maybe the outcry could lead to a new season or even a movie to tie up the plot of the show. Now, it looks as though at least one of those things is off the table. Per Variety, Netflix and creators Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij had discussed a movie but since the plan for the show’s narrative was for a five-season arc, a two-hour movie wouldn’t cut it. Variety also notes that since the series was produced by Netflix the chances of another network picking up the show are slim.

Rotten Tomatoes: Now with More Women!

Here’s something that seems long overdue: Rotten Tomatoes has added more than 600 critics to its roster in an attempt to diversify the voices used when calculating the site’s scores. The bulk of those critics—55 percent—are women and, according to The Hollywood Reporter, 10 percent review on newer platforms like podcasts, YouTube, etc. The site, the trade publication reported, is “also making meaningful progress in increasing the number of critics of color.” These updates have been a long time coming. Going back as far as 2015, Meryl Streep was calling out the Tomatometer for its lack of female input. Looks like Rotten Tomatoes finally got the message.

Leslie Jones Is Leaving Saturday Night Live

Well, this is a bummer. After five amazing years, Leslie Jones is leaving the cast of Saturday Night Live. Jones has a few movies in the works, including the Coming to America sequel Coming 2 America, and, according to Deadline, is also set to host a rebooted Supermarket Sweep.
