The Whistle Go Explore and other pet trackers let you know if your dog gets loose with app-based geofencing. But if you live in an area with spotty Wi-Fi, or near wild animals, you may have already considered an electric fence of some kind. SpotOn uses GPS signals to let you set a fence for your dog anywhere in the world. You turn on the collar, walk a perimeter, and put the collar on your dog. It’s not as easy as Jiobit and Whistle Go, but it can be done!
Using the SpotOn system will take a few weeks of training. My dog hated the big collar, and I couldn’t stand to put on the shock points, but luckily, it also uses sound alerts when your dog approaches the boundary. The SpotOn also works best if you’re setting a very big perimeter, at least 80 feet wide at its narrowest point, without buildings or tall trees to bounce the GPS pings.
If you live on a big, remote property next to a busy road, or have a neighbor who sets traps for coyotes, the effort might be worth the peace of mind.
