Whoopi Goldberg and Alexander Skarsgård Are Joining ‘The Stand’

Hello, and welcome to a spankin’ new edition of The Monitor, WIRED’s culture news roundup. What’s the new news today? For starters, CBS All Access’ adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand is rounding out its cast. Also, Oscar nominee—and self-pleasure enthusiast—Hailee Steinfeld might be the new Hawkeye. Here we go!

Hailee Steinfeld Might Be the New Hawkeye

There’s a new Hawkeye coming—and it might be Hailee Steinfeld. According to Variety, the Oscar-nominated Bumblebee actress has been offered the lead in the upcoming Hawkeye series for Disney+. Not much else is known, but if Steinfeld is locked in she’ll play Kate Bishop, who, in the comics, takes over the Hawkeye role from Clint Barton (played by Jeremy Renner in the Marvel Cinematic Universe). Not for nothing, but this is pretty excellent casting and could lead to Bishop/Steinfeld showing up in the MCU, which would be awesome.

For those of you who, like us, didn’t know—or just forgot—that CBS All Access is making an adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand, that is indeed a thing that’s happening. Also, that series now has a new cast member: Whoopi Goldberg. The actress announced her casting on The View Wednesday morning. Goldberg will play Mother Abagail, the 108-year-old woman who must save humankind in The Stand‘s battle between good and evil. Also joining the cast? Alexander Skarsgård, who will play the sorcerer Randall Flagg. CBS All Access has yet to set a premiere date for the 10-episode series.

Two Office Stars Are Making an Office Podcast

Do the endless binge-watches of The Office leave you wanting more Dunder Mifflin? Fear not, Angela and Pam are here to help. Next month, the two actresses behind the characters—Angela Kinsey and Jenna Fischer—will launch a podcast to relive all of the NBC sitcom’s best moments. Office Ladies, which will launch October 16 from Earwolf, will delve into the pair’s favorite episodes and their tales of making the beloved show. There’s definitely a “that’s what she said” joke here somewhere, but we’re not the kind of folks who would make such a joke.
